Global energy inequality

This opens two critical questions of the energy/electricity that we are requiring.  How do we bring more equitable distribution of energy resources?  Is this imbalance and the consequent strife our destiny and our demise?

What do we need the energy for? This must be one of the mantra for survival now and tomorrow. Imagining the beginning at earth resource and the subsequent flow of these products, creates a tremendous picture in motion of "energy" and resources flowing around the world. Catch 22, can't live with it and can't live presently without it.

I took the table from this site:

I copied it to an Excel spread sheet.  I added population, rank ordered the least energy use to the most, and then did an accumulation of population from least energy use to most.  I could then look at what 50% or 75% of the world’s population used compared to the USofA.

Carveat:  these figures are approximate however, realistic.

50% of the world’s population, over 3 billion people use 9.35 barrels of oil equivalent/yr.

75% of the world’s population, over 5 billion people use around 12 barrels of oil equivalent/yr.

The USofA uses 49 barrels of oil equivalent/yr. with 5% of the world’s population.

Just as interesting;
The top 5% of the world’s population uses 1/3 of the world’s energy.
They are:
United States
 Oman
 Canada
 Bahrain
 United Arab Emirates
 Brunei Darussalam
 Luxembourg
 Kuwait
 Qatar
 Trinidad and Tobago
 Iceland

Sorry don’t know how to load the spread sheet, plus it is quite large.

I have done the same process with global electrical energy consumption by country per capita.  It is quite illuminating (pun yeah).

Here is the spread sheet:

  1. Very well done, John! Thanks for laying this out so clearly for us.
